FALL 2014 ENROLLMENT REACHES NEW HEIGHTS For the second year in a row, Houston Baptist University posted record-breaking enrollment numbers for entering freshmen and total enrollment. Freshman enrollment is up 8.2% over last year’s historic high, with 615 first-year students attending classes. Combined graduate and undergraduate enrollment stands at 3,128, a 7.5% increase over last fall’s record of 2,910 students. Graduate students continue to make up a considerable proportion of overall growth, with enrollment up 13.7% over last year. Vice President for Enrollment Management James Steen said HBU’s continuing growth is especially significant when compared to national trends. “According to data from the National Student Clearinghouse, four-year private colleges have seen growth of only 1% since 2012. In that same period of time, HBU has grown 20%,” explained Steen. He noted that improved year-to-year retention rates for every student population, including freshman and minority undergraduates, contributed to the new high for overall enrollment. President Robert B. Sloan, Jr. attributes rising enrollment to several factors, particularly strong trustee support for the University’s Ten Pillars vision. The twelve-year vision, adopted in 2008, includes a commitment to historic Christian faith combined with aggressive goals for improving student academic, social, and spiritual growth opportunities. “We are reaping the benefits of greater public awareness of our outstanding faculty, the addition of new undergraduate majors and graduate programs, increasing visibility of our strong Honors College, and the strategic marketing and recruiting efforts of our admissions team,” said Sloan. The Ten Pillars vision also includes a master plan to expand and renovate academic, athletic, and recreational facilities. Since 2011, HBU has acquired an 80,000-square-foot fitness center, opened a new Fine Arts Museum, and constructed a football field and stadium for its newly launched NCAA Division I football program. Additional campus improvements are in progress. https://hbu.edu/About-HBU/General-Information/HBU-in-the-News/Press-Releases/2014/September/Fall-2014-Record-Enrollment.aspx
