FALL CLASS HIGHLIGHT: We have had successful summer programming and are excited to bring you 6 new courses starting in 6-weeks. The first class highlight is The Art of Direct Experience. Held on Wednesdays (9/3/2014 - 10/15/2014), from: 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm in partnership with the Phoenix Center for the Arts. The class description is below: Some of the best writing, whether it is fiction, memoir, or something in between, allows readers to come close, to immerse themselves in a near-direct experience. This writing course emphasizes conscious actions and descriptive writing strategies. This course holds, at its center, the belief that vivid writing derives from moving through our daily lives in a “heightened state of noticing.” Each week, the instructor assigns “action homework.” This homework requires students to perform particular actions, and then describe the experiences in writing. Sometimes the actions pertain to very ordinary daily tasks, like doing the dishes or hanging wet laundry on the line. And sometimes the actions invite participants to do something a bit out of the ordinary (e.g. waking up at dawn, singing to a loved one, chewing one’s food twice as long, visiting a local organization, staring in the mirror for thirty minutes, etc). Students will share work, develop writing skills, compose, workshop, revise, and engage in class discussions about relevant questions. Prerequisites: No experience required Ages: 14+ Cost: $100.
