FALL YOUR ALL, SWEET RAIN OF PAIN Whitney, evergreen songbird of the Houston everglades, In a long-ago dream you were my shadow sister in-law, Wed to my sibling, an addict of your lyrical offering, Whom you wowed and wooed with your flaw-free voice! Thanks to him, you lived daily in our cassette player And spooled out joy as we swam in your melody pool. Your voice flooded our room and made hearts bloom: O the repast of your riveting vocal reach! I squat now in the squall of your sonorous tale And strip your song to hear the perpetual pain there. Evident is the sense of your sentient sentences Trailed by hooked tails of querulous questions As your virtuous voice sashays into this vortex And leads my boat below sea level where it lists. You and I are a dolorous duo doing a duet! For I am there with you– through every tortured syllable, Every pain-racked strain of this wretched refrain: “Why does it hurt so bad? Why do I feel so sad?” A sad song has no right to be this sweet! No lament should be so lilting, so luscious! And yet Pain often cries out with a melody Magical enough to summon goose bumps from a deaf skin. Today, I taste the dews and sing the blues As I map and measure the landscape of melancholy. Can you hear laughter crash loudly against the shore? It is a guttural cry of protest For it is viciously vacant – untenanted by any mirth. They say our throats make the sweetest of notes When a member of our chorale abandons the band. They take away a sugary slice of our life’s melody, And chop off a choice chunk of our internal harmony. And when we wail our wet-eyed protest The magic melody we make matches the height of our loss. So fall your all, sweet rain of sweet pain! For there is much melody to be made. Fall I say! Wreck the roof, shatter the shade! O the delicious ache of melancholy’s refrain! © September 21, 2013
