FAMILY GOALS: I OWE MY FAMILY: It is not particularly hard to sound like a Christian. Talking the talk is not too tough--all it takes is some hallelujahs and amens and "I believes." Looking like an authentic Christian is harder, because when Jesus said, "Take up your cross and follow me," he invested his whole life in his commitment. We live in a country with so many social programs and entitlements that people look to the government first for their needs. St. Paul challenges us to live out our faith in the way we show family loyalty and family support for relatives who struggle. He wrote, "If anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for his immediate family, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever" (1 Timothy 5:8). You know who are some of my greatest heroes? People who have sacrificed huge amounts of their own time, energy, and treasure to care for a child with Down syndrome, frail parents, or a foster kid when they could easily have pushed those people into an institution. God agrees with me. You rock!
