FAMILY RANKING IN ACHIEVEMENTS In our family, my father taught us to be achievers. He constantly repeated that we had to be better than those who came before us. To date, my brother Leo, who obtained his bachelors and masters degrees from the London School of Economics, still holds the number one position in the family record. At the age of 23, he was president of a multinational corporation, Jardine Davies & Matheson. My daughter Tiffany, who graduated from the Les Roches Swiss School of Hotel Management with a BA in business administration, now holds the second position. At 24, she is the manager of the Front Office Department of a major hotel in London, and, in four months time, is slated to become the general manager of the hotel. Gen Jose Alejandrino, my granduncle, holds the third position. A graduate of the University of Santo Tomas and the University of Ghent in Belgium, at 29 he was the commander of the revolutionary forces in Central Luzón during the Philippine-American War. I hold the fourth position in ranking. A graduate of the American University of Paris and Columbia University in New York, at 32 I was chief of administration of the External Relations Sector of the United Nations Educational, Scientific & Cultural Organization (Unesco), at 47 general manager of The Manila Chronicle, at 49 presidential assistant for economic affairs under President Fidel Ramos with the rank of assistant secretary of state.. The fifth position goes to my daughter Rhea. A graduate of La Salle College of St. Benilde with a BA in business administration, at 35 she is the director of the Human Resources Department of Cebu Pacific. The sixth position goes to my father, Ambassador Jose Alejandrino, who obtained his bachelors of law degree from the University of the Philippines, his masters from Harvard Law School, and his doctors of law from the University of Madrid. At 48, he was promoted to the rank of ambassador in the foreign service. My brother Leo and I did better than our father, but my youngest daughter Tiffany has done better than me. My father was right. Competition in the family is the only way to become achievers.
