FAMOUS PEOPLE BORN IN NEW YORK CITY George Denis Patrick Carlin born (May 12, 1937 – June 22, 2008) in Manhattan was a comedian, social critic, actor, and author. Carlin was noted for his black comedy and his thoughts on politics, the English language, psychology, religion, and various taboo subjects. While he came from a Catholic family, Carlin himself rejected religion. He grew up on West 121st Street, in a neighborhood he said he and his friends called White Harlem, Carlin became a frequent performer and guest host on The Tonight Show, initially with Jack Paar as host, then with Johnny Carson. Carlin became one of Carsons most frequent substitutes during the hosts three decade reign.Four days before his death, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts named Carlin its 2008 Mark Twain Prize for American Humor honoree. .
