FAN HISTORY 101 -- The next two photos have cool history. Both of the young men were members of an early fan group called The Galactic Roamers centered around Battle Creek and Jackson, Michigan. The group formed after meeting E.E. Doc Smith, at the first Chicago World Science Fiction Convention in 1940, and they formed a tight relationship with the author. Reportedly, Smith sent them early drafts of his manuscripts for comment and reaction, and they acted as a sounding board for much of his work. Typewritten captions are attached to both photographs, and Ive left them in place. I hope the show up well. Just in case, the first photograph is of a fan named Ed Riehle, one of the charter members of the Galactic Roamers. The second photograph is of Maurice Atwood of Lansing, Michigan. Fan, collector and sometimes dealer in old mags. He has visited the Galactic Roamers several times, and is now a member. Really a nice chap to know.
