FANS AND FRIENDS: I talked to an agent I trust who said that my first books failure is such an albatross on my career that my best bet to return to publishing nonfiction with a traditional publisher is through self-publishing first, to prove that people will, in fact, buy my work. As many of you know, Im already prepared to pull the trigger on this, with several books already written. BUT IN ORDER TO DO THIS, I NEED TO FIGURE OUT MY LOOK, SO ILL BE POSTING A NEW PHOTO ALBUM SHORTLY AND I NEED EVERYONES OPINION. The blog, the publishing company page, and all my covers need to look more or less similar, so I have a visual theme that establishes my brand. (I have no money to hire a consultant or a designer, so youre my eyes on this.) I posted a few examples of covers several weeks ago--using black stick figure images--but a quick survey of the Humor Essays category on Amazon suggests that there is a current style that communicates smart humor book--namely, handwritten-looking text, monochrome cover, one to three objects around the title. So Ive tried a new approach, and now Im worried about legibility. Maybe what sells in a bookstore doesnt work as well online. So I just need your gut reactions: Which do you-all prefer?
