FAQs re SEYMOUR WAR MEMORIAL OUTDOOR POOL REPAIRS I have been receiving lots of questions about the SWMOP lately. Some people have emailed or spoken with me directly but I am sure there are many who have the same questions and are reluctant to ask... Q - When is the pool opening? A - No definite date. It will be opened ASAP once repairs are completed and major water losses cease. Q - Why didnt maintenance start earlier? A - At the end of last season, the pool was fine and there was no indication of any problems, no major water loss. Maintenance on the pool started a month earlier than usual in addition to some work earlier in the year. Some minor repairs were made during the maintenance phase: - repair hole in the side of deep end caused by an old bolt disintegrating - fix leaks in scum gutters. Q - What happened? A - During the commissioning of the pool for this season all was well until about 2-3 weeks prior to the opening date. The pool started losing large amounts of water for no apparent reason. On 15/11/13, local people familiar with the pool infrastructure, engineers, pool experts, divers and staff all met at the pool. An investigation began by isolating each part of the system to look for faults. The repairs listed below were undertaken. Q - What repairs have been done? A - Apart from the usual yearly maintenance and some minor repairs, as far as I am aware the following works have been undertaken: - replace major valve between the pools deep end and the unbuilt diving pool area - reline and repair balance tank - pressure test pipes between the plant and the pools. The major water loss occurring in mid-November was reduced but the pool was still losing inches of water each day. Q - Why wasnt the pool opened even if it was losing water? A - On 9/12/13, Council faced a choice: 1) try limping through the season by topping up the pool each day Considerations: - public health - difficulties in getting the chemical treatment balanced when losing so much water - environmental effects of significant chlorinated water loss to an unknown location - possibility of new major water leaks developing if the infrastructure is failing 2) keeping the pool closed, finding the leak/s and fixing it ASAP Council chose the later. Q - Whats taking so long? A - Since the repairs above, the 50m pools central channel has had the culverts removed, the sludge cleared and some cracks were detected. It was difficult to obtain the appropriate repairers over the Christmas and New Year break and was also difficult to examine the channel in the deep end due to water seeping in from the water table. Works on the channel have recommenced this week and it will be lined with a fibreglass lining and the concrete culverts replaced/broken ones rebuilt. Once the channel repair is complete, the next step will be to fill the pool and monitor the water levels. Hopefully, the water loss is at acceptable levels and the pool can be reopened without the need for further investigation/works. My apologies for the long post. :) If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact me.
