FARMERS FAIR IN RANCHI CATCH DUE ATTENTION IN THE WAKE OF DECLINING FARMING ACTIVITIES IN INDIA NRM Thematic Officer Pradipta Kishor Chand addressing media at Kishan Mela (Farmers Fair) held at Birsa Agricultural University, Ranchi held on December 19. University Dean MS Yadav assured Caritas of germplasm of the 36 indigenous paddy seeds restored by five local communities that were on display on the occasion. Organic produces by local farmers and low cost bucket kit model were among the major attractions during the mela. Principal scientist BK Agarwal and Chairman Soil Science were among the six other dignitaries who graced the event. The kishan mela gains significance in the wake of declining agricultural practices in India. As per the National Sample Survey Organization (NSSO) report 2012-13, hardly 58 percent of rural households in India are engaged in farming activity, contributing not even 60 percent to their average total monthly income. As of today over 50 percent of Caritas Indias programs are NRM based said AED Shimray. Hosted by Caritas Local Member organization Naya Savera, the event was co-sponsored by Caritas India and SCIAF from Scotland.
