FARMERS JAILED FOR STEALING MOTORCYCLE A Magistrate’s Court in Makurdi, Benue State has sentenced two farmers to one year imprisonment for stealing a motorcycle. The farmers, Gabriel Uyua and Hembaor Nyiter, were on Wednesday convicted for criminal conspiracy, trespass, mischief and theft. The offences are punishable under Sections 97, 348, 327 and 287 of the Penal Code. According to First Information Report (FIR), one Francis Ngiga of Leva village reported to the ‘C’ Division Police Station in North-Bank that his motorcycle valued at N60,000 was stolen from his compound on August 26. The FIR stated that two people trespassed into the complainant’s compound where he parked the bike, damaged the lock and took it away. The court further heard that the complainant raised alarm when he noticed that his motorcycle had been taken away. The report added that the complainant raised an alarm which attracted passersby who went after the suspects and apprehended them. It was gathered that the convicts confessed to the crime during police investigation and pleaded for leniency. Delivering judgment, Magistrate Austin Ityoyiman sentenced the duo to six months imprisonment for conspiracy and another six months for theft with an option of N10, 000 fine each. The convicts could not afford the fine, so they were taken to the prison.
