FASHION FOOD FOR THOUGHT (of the day): Just had another great (very fast) talk with renowned fashion journalist Teri Agins! She is soooo fantastic, knowledgable and clear headed about this industry — even as shes doling the out a bitter reality hard knocks perspective about fashion and whats no longer working/happening the way it once did in this ever evolving, cut throat and, sometimes insidious world that is fashion! On of the most important pieces of wisdom that came out of that whirlwind conversation about what were endeavoring to accomplish here in Austin with FICA and TAMICA is: Find some way to band together with something already established and where there are consumers... She also said have and create a critical mass... (with regard to designers and creating collections). If you have to have consumers to make it. She talked about last weeks NY Fashion Week, ... we had over 300 shows and events, for what? No ones going to these shows... No one meaning the industry folks who can influence whether a designer/collection last past the week let alone the season. And thats in NY, what difference will Austin make to its fashion designers and industry as a whole — including the production side? One way RWU is endeavoring to make that difference is through our NTUMAPA Apparel Production Skills Boot Camp Workshop, our Apparel Workroom and Studio individual workshops, classes and consultations services. NTUMAPAs workroom is available for meetings, for designers and apparel techs (of all ethnicities) to have a place to work on projects (albeit short term) as well as a place for related industry activities. We do what we do the way we do it because were here to be of service — period!!! Were not doing it what we do for the glory, fame or to pay our mortgages or to fund vacation trips or even to say were better than... Thats not the point or the goal. We do what we do to help other become better. We do it because it needs doing and so that other folks (anyone) can get what the need not just what they dream... Also in that conversation with Teri, she kept emphasizing, Go where the fish are. Well, fish have to have water to exist, RWU and NTUMAPA is one fresh water pond and the sharks and piranhas are trying to get in before or just as the little fishies can get what they need... Theres a whole lot of work that needs to be done to get what we need for the city as a whole with FICA and TAMICA and its not going to get done or last once things are in place if we dont band together in order to establish and maintain a critical mass in our fashion industries communities! [And if you dont know who Teri Agins is, TISK TISK!] RWU/Nailah fashionweekdaily/teri-agins-turf/
