FAT BOIZ - A Fair Review Of Puerto Rican Cuisine By A Demanding Puerto Rican (Food Wise) September 13, 2014 at 8:44pm I dont think I need to state just how much Ive been anticipating the opening of this restaurant and today they finally did albeit with some bumps which were absolutely out of their control. In spite of the bumps, they bravely pushed ahead knowing that folks were looking for this place to open and overcame and conquered, and those of us who came through the drenching rain left with very happy tummies!!! We arrived at opening time and met Tom and Carmen Rue, so we made a table of it. Juni, the owner, and his lovely wife Johany met us and we chatted a bit. They explained the bump and the outcome of said bump which was an unfortunately limited menu, BUT JUST FOR TONIGHT!!! Things should be okay tomorrow, though they will be closed on Sundays starting next weekend. Their offering tonight was Arroz con Gandules (Yellow Rice with Pigeon Peas,) Pollo Guisado (Stewed Chicken,) Pollo Frito (Fried Chicken,) Arroz Blanco (White Rice,) and Ensalada (Salad.) I REPEAT THIS IS JUST A ONE DAY TEMPORARY SETBACK...OPENING DAY BUMP!!!!! Pilar, Carmen, and Tom opted for the Arroz con Gandules and Pollo Guisado and I tried the Pollo Frito and the Arroz Blanco. Before I go any further I have to share that I gauge a Spanish restaurant by the quality of its white rice. If it does not taste like my moms rice...BLEEECH! This has become such a recurring issue, yucky white rice, bland white rice, weird tasting white rice, that I just stopped ordering white rice from ANYWHERE outside of my moms kitchen while she could still cook and now my kitchen where I follow her ultra delicious super yummy, no other rice recipe can compare, receta por arroz (recipe for white rice.) With that said and done....this rice ....WAS RICE!!!! It was super yummy and the fried chicken, skinless breasts, was scrumptiously delicious. So tasty and Super moist, I could not have topped it. The edges were nicely crisped and the combined flavors of the rice with the chicken were enough to sweep one away to any one of the little eateries which dot many of the beaches in Puerto Rico. I had some of Pilars Pollo Guisado and Arroz con Gandules and they were perfect, perfect, perfect. The food is plain simple Puerto Rican cuisine with no airs of superiority about it. And quite frankly, what we sampled tonight had no need of airs. The same with the proprietors. They came off as plain simple honest folk with an honest flair for good wholesome Puerto Rican food. By the way, Junis Papa is the chef in back!!! The restaurant itself is quite festive in color and in the beautiful art pieces which line their walls. It is simple with intimate tables for two lining one wall and bigger tables for bigger groups lining the other wall. They are working towards becoming Green Certified so that should make all you feral environmentalists amongst my readers happy. All in all we had great ethnically authentic Puerto Rican Cuisine, with great company, Tom and Carmen, and prepared by some of the nicest people Ive ever had the pleasure of meeting for the first time! Soooooo looking forward to our next visit, which will probably be this coming week, when we plan to feast on Pernil, Maduros, Bacalaitos, Arroz con Habichuelas, FLAN!!!!! And no, Im not translating all of that. Writing it once has me drooling already! They have a very robust menu as you can see in the pictures I am providing, and everything on it looks absolutely YUMMY!!! They do also have more traditional North American Fare, but I cant see myself walking into that place for a hamburger.
