FB Family... I know due to the immense number of disasters we have witnessed over the past decade (from Katrina to Haiti to Superstorm Sandy), it is easy to take in stride the massive humanitarian disaster unfolding in the Philippines. It is easy to be calloused and flippant with our concern because it is a half a world away and feel we cant do anything of value, but I beg to differ. We can do a lot if we get our government, churches and social media friends to focus on the enormity of events happening there. The reason I fear this has the potential of becoming the most devastating humanitarian disasters of our lifetime is simply this... Ask yourself how long it took us to get water and help to the people in New Orleans -- A Major metropolitan city on the mainland of the richest country known in history? How many people died? It was pure chaos, but because of the rest of our nation pitching in and the government finally getting its act together, help finally arrived. Now contrast that with a relatively poor but economically growing nation who is surrounded by water in isolation, and now with the infrastructure of both a good portion of the country and of the government now gone. People are left to fend for themselves, for others in the region have been impacted by the worst and strongest typhoon ever recorded. If we dont react, then who are we (reacting beyond a few posts on FB and watching the news)? I dont have all the answers, but among us, there are those who have the ideas to help. We need to set aside for a moment our trivial concerns and agendas to get those who can to focus on the Philippines and send the massive volume of help needed... and even open our doors to Filipino refugees who need our long term help. This has to be a national movement and call to action. Please forward if you believe we should help.
