FDOT and DeMoya called for a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a celebration today for the completion of the N. Roosevelt project! Speaking for my constituents, I am not in a celebratory mood. A sigh of relief? Yes! But it’s hard to celebrate when we were treated in such manner, and so many businesses went under! For the record let me make it clear that the City had little or no input on this project. FDOT and DeMoya shoved it down our throats, and it wasnt until we—a coalition of merchants, members of the City Commission and other citizens stood up to them at a Commission meeting; and demanded from the Secretary of FDOT to try Plan B: 2 way traffic! They stated they thought it wouldnt work! We told them to try. Guess what? It worked! DeMoya had blatant disregard for the needs of our community and FDOT was derelict in their job as the governmental watchdog agency by allowing the contractor to dictate the schedule and work conditions! For the record Charlie Phinizy, Jackie Hart and Dean Walters did their best given the cards they were dealt. However, Celebration? No! Sigh of relief? Definitely! This is like a long suffering ill patient who is finally told he’s healed and can now go home; one is grateful, but also remembers all the pain and suffering! I, as a citizen, as well as a representative of the people of Key West give FDOT and DeMoya both an unsatisfactory grade!!
