FEAR and FRIENDSHIP I recently did a presentation on the subject of fear and how it affects our lives. And I thought about my childhood and how fear was a major force in my life for a very long time. I am not talking about the normal kind of fear that would stop us from stepping out in front of a moving car and getting hit, no. I am talking about the completely irrational kind of fear that exists in our minds. Fear is good, it keeps us in check and keeps us focused, but sometimes, it can get out of hand. I remember dying to make friends, but too scared to reach out because in my mind, I kept thinking, ‘what if they don’t like me?’ A lot of times, we play the ‘ I think that they think that’ game. Just like we are sometimes scared to reach out to people, most times , these same people are thinking that we might not like them. Then opportunities are lost where a chance encounter could have grown into a friendship. Now I find it easy to just smile and be the first to say hello. I just tell myself the worst that could happen is that someone would not smile back, not greet back and it is only my ego that would be a little dented, it would not be the end of the world. And because we attract what we think about to our lives, our fears generally end up becoming a reality. So we just need to learn to let go of fear and develop personal courage. The courage to reach out to others and at the same time, to stand up for ourselves if our personal boundaries are being overstepped. Like Winston Churchill said, “ There is nothing to fear but fear itself.”
