Each painting, work on paper, and sculpture will be featured in Birds in Art at the Rockport Center for the Arts as a traveling exhibit of the famous and world-renowned Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum’s annual Birds In Art. Throughout the years, the exhibit has morphed and grown, and now is recognized around the world as the exhibition that sets the standard for avian art. Free and open to the public, Birds In Art will celebrate the timeless appeal of birds through fresh artistic interpretations and will be on exhibit from September 14 through November 16 at the Rockport Center for the Arts in Rockport, Texas, an exclusive Texas showing of the 2012 Juried exhibition. “Three simple words - birds in art – have become synonymous with the absolute best in avian art from around the world. Few nature art shows even come close to the professionalism and impressive quality of Birds In Art. Our feathered friends have been used in art for thousands of years, but artists have come a long way,” says John Aäsp, Curator and Visual Arts Director for the Center. Three local Texas artists will be featured in the prestigious exhibit. Al Barnes, James Offeman and Kent Ullberg, all well-known in Rockport and Center member artists, will be featured in the exhibit will join a host of U.S. artists, as well as thirty-three international artists and nineteen first-time Birds in Art artists. 2012 Rockport Center for the Arts Resident Artist from the Netherlands, Ewoud de Groot, has a painting in the Birds In Art exhibit as well. Since 1976, the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum’s annual Birds in Art exhibit has showcased the remarkable talents of more than 900 international artists, who have presented their very best work interpreting birds and related subject matter. Whether the subjects are backyard feeder favorites or exotic species from around the world, an international cast of artists interprets avian themes and habitats employing diverse styles and mediums. “We are lucky to be able to bring this exhibit to the Coastal Bend. Art lovers and bird lovers alike will definitely be impressed with this selection of work, and it’s the only Texas venue for the show.” adds Aäsp. Each year, Birds in Art garners thousands of submissions from around the world, and approximately 100 to 120 pieces are chosen by a jury to go on display at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum in Wausau, Wisconsin. In 2012, close to 600 artists collectively entered nearly 1,000 works of paintings, sculptures, photographs and other mediums. Following a stint at the Woodson Art Museum, Birds In Art stages a traveling exhibit where a smaller number of featured items are selected to be included in a national or international tour, considerably expanding the exhibition’s reach to broader audiences. Additional venues include the Newington-Cropsey Foundation in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York and the Frank H. McClung Museum at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. This year’s traveling exhibit includes 50 paintings and works on paper and ten sculptures. A fully illustrated, four-color catalogue accompanies each Birds in Art exhibition. Catalogues will be available at the Center.
