FEDERAL: 9/8 SMOKE AND HITMEN OPEN SEASON WITH WINS The Smoke and the Hitmen were the only teams yet to open the Fall 14 Fed season. On Monday night both clubs were able to show there wares during a AIAHL double header. The Smoke faced off against Powertime and earned the victory by a hard fought 4-3 margin. Powertime opened the scoring 34 seconds into the game when Pat Mack lit the lamp off a nice Tom OConnell helper. The Smoke countered with 3 first period goals by John Sydlo, Mark Sweeney and Chris Melrose. Powertime evened up in the third when Mack scored his second of the game. The eventual game winner came halfway through the period on a goal from Smoke centerman Chuck Dunster. The Hitmen were able to beat the Buzzards in a battle of former Iron leaguers by a 5-4 score. The strong Hitmen lineup was left looking up to the rafters after Buzzards netminder Kevin Kobalinski repeatedly stole goals away with highlight reel saves. Hitmen forward Mitchell got the game winner with 3:01 left in the third.
