FEDERAL ROAD SAFETY CORPS ( FRSC), NIGERIA wrote: ZUBA FATAL CRASH: DEATH TOLL INCREASES TO SIX AS FRSC INITIATES TASK FORCE TO FEND- OFF ILLEGAL MOTOR PARKS PRESS RELEASE: FOR IMMEDIATE USE ABUJA: 14 JULY, 2013 The Federal Road Safety Corps has confirmed that death toll from last night’s (13/07/13)fatal road crash at Dan Kogi, along the Zuba-Gwagwalada road, has increased to six persons as one of the fourteen injured passengers died, early hours of sunday at Lucas Hospital, Madalla. Five persons died at the scene. According to the Unit Commander of the FRSC Zuba Unit Command, Akptobo Paulinus, the crash occurred at 6pm, at Azman filling station when a tanker laden with fuel (XG 340 RED), suddenly developed brake failure and rammed into a stationary Abuja Urban Mass Transit bus loaded with passengers. He added that the impact of the crash also affected 3 Golf cars (AT 529 LIN, SBG 418 AA and RAN 208 AA), a Toyota Sienna bus (GX 135 ABC) and 3 motorcycles. With the combined efforts of an FRSC rescue team and other agencies such as the Nigeria Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Directorate of Road Traffic Services (VIO) and the Fire Service, the dead and injured victims were taken to the Gwagwalada Specialist Hospital, Lucas Hospital Madalla and St. Mary Catholic Hospital, Gwagwalada. The Unit Commander also said that an empty tanker was secured from the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) to trans-load the content of the crashed tanker before restoring normal traffic flow at the scene of the crash. Meanwhile, a special task force has been set up along the crash scene (Dan Kogi) to stamp out illegal activities of road transport operators which accounts for numerous crashes along that route. Speaking at a meeting of the Nigeria Police, Directorate of State Security Services, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and the FRSC with the Emir of Zuba, Alhaji Mohammed Bello, the Zuba Unit Commander of the FRSC disclosed that intensive patrols are to be carried out along the corridor to fend-off illegal activities of transport operators that create obstructions along the route. Meanwhile, the Corps has expressed concern over the increasing spate of road crashes involving articulated vehicles, often linked to brake failure and reiterated its determination address this trend which violates the requirements of the Road Transport Safety and Standardization Scheme (RTSSS). The scheme mandates fleet operators to comply with minimum safety requirements bordering on their vehicles and drivers in order to enhance safety of lives and property on the road. It will be recalled that the Corps had last month, dragged 10 transport companies to a Benin Magistrate court for failing to comply with regulations bordering on the road transport safety standardization scheme (RTSSS). Same, will be extended to all the states of the federation to ensure better and safer fleet management, nationwide. The FRSC also appeals to motorists to always drive with caution and also ensure proper maintenance of their vehicles especially during this rainy season.
