FEDERATION COUNCIL CHAIRMAN, VALENTINA MATVIYENKO, OPENS EURASIAN INTEGRATION DISCUSSION AT MGIMO The Chairman of Russia’s Federation Council, Valentina Matviyenko opened an Integration club discussion on «Community History as a Factor in the Creation of a Eurasian Union» at MGIMO. In her opening speech Matviyenko noted that integration processes are a major contemporary trend, with communities of interests and values laying the strongest basis for strong international associations, with growing Eurasian integration proceeding on the basis of deep strategic partnerships and alliances similar to the CIS. She added that cultural traditions and joint heritage were an ideal basis for cultural integration across Eurasia, and also welcomed Armenia and Kyrgyzstan to consideration of Eurasian integration, with alternative consideration of either EU or Russia artificial. MGIMO Rector, and Board member of the Integration club, Anatoly Torkunov, also emphasized the importance of uniform values, and agreed that European and Eurasian integration shouldn’t be exclusive concepts, with integration leading to greater uniformity from Lisbon to Vladivostok and leading to trade and economic advantages, but also the maintenance of a system of values and cultural heritage of the peoples of Eurasia. He added that the «the Russian kernel» had not only proven itself durable but capable of peacefully adapting to a range of peoples across the region. The discussion also included a range of major political, business and administrative luminaries from nations across Eurasia. The conclusion the meeting saw Valentina Matviyenko thank participants for the quality of the dialogue. The integration club was created in April, 2012 by the Chairman of the Federation Council of Russia as a permanent advisory body to prepare improved legal and administrative ties, and deepen integration processes in nations of the former Soviet Union. mgimo.ru/news/university/document243338.phtml
