Inslee says budget deal near, hopes to rescind layoff notices Gov. Jay Inslee Monday afternoon told reporters “very substantive, positive developments” in budget negotiations lead him to believe a budget deal could be hours away and he can rescind the notices of temporary layoffs. The notices went out Monday afternoon because without a budget, there’s no certainty the state can spend money past July 1. The governor said the risk of a state shutdown is less than it was Monday morning. He voiced frustration that the notices had to go out as required by law and says those who got them should be rightfully “ticked off.” But there appears to be light at the end of the tunnel, he said. “There have been very positive developments here and I want folks to continue focusing on their jobs today and I think there is a very, very good chance in the next few hours that there is an agreement that we can rescind those decisions,” Inslee said. “Now we won’t actually be able to technically rescind them until I actually sign the bill, and that would take a matter of days. “But once we decide that negotiations are complete, we’ll get that information out to state employees by e-mail right away.” To recap: • The Federation filed a demand to bargain over the notices to protect your rights. • Layoff resources, unemployment insurance information and links to media stories featuring Federation members are on our website at wfse.org.
