FEEL FREE TO CUT AND PASTE THIS LETTER IN SUPPORT OF SAVING THIS ARCHITECTURAL TREASURE IN MID-CITY. PERTINENT EMAIL ADDRESSES FOR RECIPIENTS ARE AT THE BOTTOM. THANK YOU!!! Dear Councilperson, I am writing in support of the preservation of the General Laundry Cleaners and Dyers Building located near the intersection of Broad and Orleans in Mid-City. This Art Deco gem cries out for rehabilitation NOT demolition. As the Broad Street corridor sees increased development we should keep in mind that research shows that the rehabbing of old buildings actually creates more economic impact than the same-size investment in new construction. Historic preservation reinforces the five senses of quality communities: sense of place, sense of identity, sense of evolution, sense of ownership, and sense of community. Only a foolish local government would make a false choice between historic preservation and economic development when we can effectively utilize the historic built environment to meet the economic, social, and cultural needs of our citizens and visitors. Certainly our city has plenty of vacant land available for new construction - but such excellent examples of the Art Deco period are very rare here in New Orleans. Please do not let this building be demolished. With best regards,
