FEEL GOOD FRIDAY: JERSEY AND ROSIE HOW ONE RESCUED DOG HELPED HEAL THE HEART OF ANOTHER Get ready to get out your tissue! JERSEY AND ROSIES STORY Sadie and Jersey werent biologically related, but were siblings in every sense of the word. They were put together as small puppies, so had no memories of life without each other. When they were brought to our attention, they were just beginning to become seniors (both were turning seven), and needed a comfortable indoor retirement home. Sadly, Jersey and Sadie had been relegated to living in a pen during the day, as their owners had developed health issues, and could no longer walk or care for them the way they used to. A pen is no place for dogs to spend most of their time, and thats even more true for those who lived inside with their family at one point. Their family knew they couldnt care for Jersey and Sadie properly anymore, and didnt want to have them prematurely euthanized. They did the right thing, and gave the Labs to Heavenly Creatures, so that we could find them a better life. We told them that we couldnt promise the dogs would get to stay together, but would do our very best to adopt them as a pair. As luck would have it, we quickly found a really good home for Jersey and Sadie together (no easy feat, as most people dont want large dogs, more than one dog, or older dogs), and we thought they had their happily ever after together. Tragically, Sadie died suddenly of a blood clot about in August of 2013. Her mom wrote at the time: Sadie passed away at home with her loving mom and brother, Jersey, on August 11, just 4 days away from her 8th birthday. She was the sunshine of everyones life who met her. She lived life to the fullest: she loved to play with her ball, go for long walks, play in streams and wake her mommy up early in the morning to get the day started by wagging her thunder tail so hard that it would shake the entire bed! She was a very happy girl, was very loved and will be missed every single day Jersey and his mom were DEVASTATED by the loss of their beautiful, golden girl. When theres always been two, one is a very lonely number. Jersey had always been part of a pair, so his mom knew he must really be missing his sister. She knew she had to find him another sibling, but it had to be the right match. They took another HC dog on a trial adoption, but she just wasnt the right fit, and the grief for Sadie was still too fresh. Enter Rosie. Us Heavenly Creatures volunteers were concerned about a dog who could be heard frantically barking sometimes at night when we were leaving our office. We couldnt see her, but we could sure hear her, and she didnt sound happy. We werent sure which garden the mournful noise was coming from. We heard from neighbours that she was left outside a lot. Eventually, we figured out which house owned her, and approached the owner. He explained that she was a young dog who spent most of her time on the deck. It was a case of good intentions gone wrong: He had tried to do a good thing by Rosie - he had rescued her from someone who had threatened to have her killed - but he had gotten in over his head. He couldnt keep up with the care that a young dog demands, so Rosie had spent months outside a lot howling out of boredom and frustration. Rosie was/is a bouncing black and white bundle of puppyish energy! She needed exercise, structure, and lots of love. We suspected that we knew a mom and big brother who could give her just that! The rest, as they say, is history. Jersey once again has a sister with whom to play ball (he loves that ball!), and his mom - who has such a big heart with so much love to give - once again has two fur babies. This month marks their one-year anniversary together. Their mom says: Rosie has been with us pne year next month, so I thought I would send you and your team some updated pictures of her and her brother Jersey. Thank you for bringing my little girl into our lives. Jersey and Rosie say ruff! We like to think that Sadie guided us from Heaven to bringing Rosie to her family. Pictured on the left are Jersey (showing his ball to the camera!), and Rosie, and on the right is beautiful Sadie (2005-2013).
