FERNDALE — Michael Koenen lined up at quarterback at Ferndale High School on Saturday morning. Draped in Tampa Bay Buccaneers gear, a team he’s played for since 2011, the Golden Eagle alumni had a look of focus on his face. Normally, when he’s on the field, Koenen is used to 250-to-300 pound behemoths coming after his head when he prepares to fire off a booming punt. Saturday was a little different, though. Koenen spent some time at QB and looked down at the defense. Sure, similar to his NFL opponents, some teeth were missing, but he’d see a 3’5, 50-pound athlete headed his way to make a play with the same tenacity as Sundays in the fall. That’s because Koenen, Tennessee Titans’ QB Jake Locker and several other NFL players gave up their time last weekend to host the 2013 Michael Koenen/Jake Locker NFL All-Star Youth Football Camp Around 400 youngsters in grades three through six covered the fields at FHS early Saturday morning and Koenen said he couldn’t have been happier with the turnout for the free camp.
