FEW GLIMPSES OF COMMERCIAL BANKING SINCE 1965 ---PART 4 A TRANSITIO0N FROM TRAINING TO JOB AT DESK IN 1967 After my absorption into regular service I was placed in Zonal Office Chittagong for my ultimate placement in one of the branches. It was a temporary arrangement. This was a control office of entire Chittagong region headed by a brilliant Banker. There were few officers and staff that assisted the Regional Head in his control and administration of the zone. During my brief stay with the zonal Office I got my first exposure how the Zonal offices works. The zonal office used to follow Head office in their administration and control of the branches under them. Their communication with the branches in writing bore the hall mark of Head Office communication. I tried to read all communication to and from Head Office. I tried to predict what kind of response Head Office will make to Zonal Office letters and reversal. Later on I compared how my prediction deviated. The same way I followed Zonal communication with branches. I was amazed my prediction mostly came very close to actual communications between both ways. This gradually gave me confidence that I was very near the ways things are done at Zonal Office. Then the actual test came. I used to draft some response letters for the zonal Chief which the departmental officers used to place to him for approval. I was delighted to see most of my drafts got approved by the Zonal Chief without much correction or alternation. My confidence gained momentum and my reputation as a good officer and communicator also established in the Zonal Office. Soon I became a favorite officer to Zonal Head. I was in the Zonal Office for a period of 3 months. Then I was posted in Chittagong Laldighi East branch, the largest branch with all types of banking business to work at desk level. In this office I came to know there are typist who were so skilled they could filter all sorts of mistake in any communication or statement. At the time of typing they would check everything of its content and if found anything wrong or inconsistent they would set it right in consultation with the respective writer. This sort of efficiency and skill are very rare now a days. (more to follow next)
