FF - a friend of mine from out of state made a surprise visit today on her way to visit Cape Cod. I decided to take Billy out of school for an hour so he could join us for lunch. While at the Pizzeria a man walked in with an artificial leg. He was not in anyway attempting to hide it (why should he). He stood behind us in line, Billy asked what happened to your leg? The man responded he had a bad infection and before it spread to the rest of his body he had to have the leg removed. Billy asked Did it hurt, where did the doctor put the other leg, can he run on the leg, and other innocent curious questions. The man responded kindly to all of Billys questions and did not seem to be annoyed by being barraged with them. Billy then said, I think your leg is much cooler than mine, it is like electronic...super bad! After we all ordered and Billy was satisfied that all his questions was answered, we sat down and my friend looked at me and said I cannot believe you allowed him to bother that man like that, what if he was embarrassed or ashamed. hhhmmmm......I do not think he was embarrassed or ashamed as he had the leg visible while wearing shorts in 40 degree temps. The man did not give quick or dismissive answers. I asked her, would she rather that I tell Billy Dont stare! and whisper while the man surely knows what we are talking about? I then reminded her that my father does not have use of his legs and used metal crutches and very large, obvious metal leg braces to get around and that he NEVER minded the children questions, what he DID mind was the parents that shushed their children and told them to look away....And BTW the leg was really impressive!!!!
