FG Indicts ASUU Over Misuse Of Funds Source: Leadership The industrial action rocking the university system may linger for long as the Federal Government, yesterday, accused the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and various universities management of also failing to meet their own part of the bargain, especially on effective utilisation of funds injected into the system. Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Julius Okojie, who made the accusation, said the institutions have not been making good use of the huge financial allocations from the Federal Government and at such no tangible impact has been seen in the sector in the past few years. Okojie denied that negotiations between federal government representatives, comprising Senate and House of Representatives Committees on Education and those of ASUU, had broken down, and said talks were still ongoing and all parties had been freely speaking their minds. The NUC boss spoke at a one-day workshop on African Centres of Excellence held in Abuja, yesterday. “Every year government, through TETFund, disburses about N600million to each public university, some of it for capacity building, some for capital development and for us we are not seeing very much improvement in the university system,” he said. Meanwhile, while negotiations between representatives of federal government and those of ASUU continue in order to meet the demands of the union, federal government yesterday pleaded with striking members of the union to suspend the strike and return to the classroom.
