FGASA Western Cape Conference Tour guiding isn’t a job. - TopicsExpress

FGASA Western Cape Conference Tour guiding isn’t a job. It’s not something you do to buy groceries. Tour guiding is a career. It is the pursuit of a passion to realise long term ambitions. Doing this successfully makes continuous learning essential. At our next FGASA Western Cape Conference our speakers and their topics represent all stages of the career path of a successful guide. We start off at ground level, as it were, with author and geologist Nick Norman. Then we listen to a group of students from Centurion Academy who will tell us about their FGASA experience. Next we head into new territory for FGASA as one of the first groups of cultural guides to be trained through FGASA do a presentation that’ll form part of their evaluation. Once qualified, earning a living from tour guiding can be challenging, especially if you can’t afford your own vehicle or perhaps don’t have a driver’s license or PDP. Drive Direct’s Trevor Beukes could have the solution. With wheels sorted, we turn our attention to marketing and take a look at a new web portal that recently launched in SA that brings guides and travellers together – anyroad. We then turn our attention to continuous development. Here we can count on Professors Matilda Burden (US) and Gavin Maneveldt (UWC) to keep us on the edges of our seats. Prof Burden will talk on an aspect of cultural history and Prof Maneveldt on ‘Conserving biodiversity on road verges and public open spaces.’ We conclude the formal part of our conference with a word from FGASA’s Standards Director, Brian Serrao, who’ll be visiting our region from Gauteng. Lunch & networking follow. Hope to see you there! Please rsvp to siegfried.schafer@gmail before 31 May 2014.
