FGC DAURA; It’s just God’s sake. Life they say is full of lesson for people of understanding, I couldn’t agree any more than now. There is this Hausa proverb which says “kowa ya tuna bara, bai ji dadin bana ba” literally means he who remember the past, is not quite happy with the present (I hope I’m right). But a time I tend to criticize these proverbs & adages, because aside from the fact that their constructors, the wise men did that based on their conditions and time, we also don’t know what push them to do that. Like so many of them, the above proverb cannot fit in my remembrance of Daura life & times. Coz I’m happier now than then, also remembering those memories ignites more happiness in me and many others, I’m sure. We always find FGC Daura topic very interesting to discuss. We are fond of doing that anytime we meet one another, that is secondary school life for you. When you look back, you can’t help but give thanks to God the Almighty, we lived under some of the harshest conditions anyone within our age bracket can think of, but still in His infinite mercy He gave us the strength and endurance to come out even stronger and proud. I want to reel in some of these situations. Did you Remember those times when we use to fetch water from the reservoir?, sometimes, the only water you can find in there is the one that lay, and it contains all the dirt that settled in the bottom. The reservoir been the last resort makes it difficult to find water anywhere, so junior boys will drink from that laid water using our shirt as the sieve. Other times, the only source of water is that pump inside the reservoir at the extreme end (for those that knew) that supplies the reservoir, so some students will go in there to get a clean water; it was hellish coz of the heat and darkness. we drink from such water and mostly it does no harm to us, just imagine you drinking such water now, I’m sure many of us will be admitted to take drips. Did you also remember the dinning food? Specifically the rice, and especially when Alfa was the principal. If you don’t, I do. It’s the local type of rice that they cooked for us, full of stones (and the dining prefects behave as if its their personal property). Truly I lose count of my friends whom where operated upon of appendix! Be grateful if you weren’t not among them. I dare say that even the IDPs (internally displace persons) don’t sleep in the kind of place we slept at Daura, they may be sleeping in classes, agreed. But not congested ones. As we all know, our rooms are congested to the peak, minimum of ten (or more) students, scattered all around are boxes and lockers (for some its wardrobes), normally no one gets a bunk except SS3 and some few privileged SS2 students. The worst happens during rainy season and harmattan, coz many times we all sleep in the compound. During the worst case scenarios, you will find students sleeping inside ceiling (like me, makaveli), on top lockers (Auwal chop chop etc), on boxes, under bunks (muhafsa et.c), in the corridor near toilets. Just imagine the unpleasant breath that goes round, the tight ventilation caused by congestion, the high risk of meningitis (it even cost a friend his life “Abdulmalik tanimu ” may his soul rest in peace). Still we came out gallantly, didn’t we? As for the ‘town goers’ we knew how the staffs use to chase us, on foot, in their bikes and cars, had it been Daura town is congested with vehicles like bigger cities students will have been jammed by vehicles or they (students) will ram in to them. Coz it’s a matter of life and death, we run blindly and the lucky ones escape. When it comes to punishment, the one in FGC is similar to one meted on slaves during slave trade. Just remember, for the boys, you must remove your shirt and singlet (if any), then lie down and bury your head, already the whips ‘koboko’ have been rubbed with groundnut oil (they say it makes it hurts more). That’s how we get beaten, for those who watch ’12 years a slave’ will testify. After that you will now ‘dig your height’ which serve as soak-away for the school, (as if they can’t pay labourers). Is it not only the marks that remain now? Just imagine all the above instances will now happen to you, abeg person no fit die????? Alhamdulillah Sulaiman Confi
