FGDR has always been about trying to educate. We are one of only a few groups across Canada that choose to use our social media platforms to post things that need to be brought to the publics attention in order to bring awareness. Others like to post the sugary, cutesy stuff all the time but never post anything about the real domestic pet problems we have here in Canada. How will we ever bring change without education? However, you will see oodles of posts for fundraising for $1000s upon $1000s of dollars being raised to import dogs from all around the world. Today, a friend in rescue pmd us her heart and soul thoughts about some of these issues and we felt it was important to share. Some people are afraid to speak up because of the likelihood of being bullied just for simply posting their opinion. We have been bullied but we choose to ignore such childish behavior. A lot of times people bully to make themselves feel better because they arent in fact doing anything about the problem. Here is one persons insight that we also feel very strongly about the points that have been made... Canadians live in blissful denial. Given I was having a bad day, I was, once again, composing stuff in my mind. I should note here that on top of bad ... more bad, one of the puppies (8 weeks old) which was to fly next weekend allegedly froze to death last night and another one was lost to the wolves Part of that composition was attempting to address the skeletons in the closet of the collective great nation which we call home, Canada. My heart is heavy and my soul is weary ... I am proud to be Canadian but, also, very ashamed ... ashamed of that which we, Canadians, allow to happen in this our home: * dog culls wherein dogs are shot, for a bounty; many are wounded and wander off to suffer a slow agonizing & painful death, other wounded ones are more fortunate (a sad statement in & of itself) as they become prey. * Amish puppy mills, in Ontario, allowed to continue operating under the OSPCA ... nothing more than a manufacturing facility for puppies, with no regard to the health & mental well-being of the animals. * Quebec commercial breeding facilities and puppy mills ... nothing more than a manufacturing facility. Under the watch of MAPAQ (btw, if you want to be very disheartened go oback over the many years the Minister of Agriculture, in Quebec, has made shutting down puppy mills a priority ... ) * Killing of viable animals, in shelters, for space using gas chambers, heart sticking and the more humane lethal injection. The dirty secret of all Humane Societies, SPCAs and local pounds / animal control facilities !!!!! Lets not forget about those animals that are also sent to research facilities under contract. * the abandonment of puppies and kittens, left in cardboard boxes, in sub-freezing temperatures. In addition to our companion animals, our great nation participates in horse culls, bear hunts, seal hunts ~ the things that outrage Canadians when it happens elsewhere in the world. The world believes a lie, and Canadians have bought into the lie as well. The world believes that Canadian companion animals live the life of Riley with every luxury afforded them. The lie that Canada does not have a pet over population issue. Or, that any animal is treated badly. We, Canadians, chose to believe that we are better - not in a pompous or arrogant manner, in an ignorant manner. According to recent statistics, there are 840+ Canadian animal welfare / rescue organizations and some 140+ Humane Societies and SPCAs across Canada. An estimated 2 million dogs are without a home in our great land. Imagine, if all of the animal welfare / rescue organizations, Humane Societies, SPCAs, local animal controls and pounds ... all of their people whether employees or volunteers combined voices with all of the Canadian cross-posters, transporters and other volunteers to present a unified front to have (1) federal animal welfare legislation changed and (2) to address the skeletons in our closet ... the millions of homeless cats and dogs right here in Canada. Pretty sad when you put in writing!
