FILM & FEAST – ‘GM FREEZE’ Talk by Jessica Harrison & Local Organic Dinner Posted by transiti Comments Off Wednesday, 14 August 2013, 6.30 for 7 pm, 95 Roscoe Street, Bondi Beach: FILM & FEAST – ‘GM FREEZE’ Talk by Jessica Harrison & Local Organic Dinner GM Free Australia Alliance is calling for a FREEZE on growing, importing and patenting Genetically Modified Organisms in Australia & New Zealand. The campaign is supported by a wide alliance of organisations sharing the public’s deep concern about the speed at which genetic modification is being introduced into food and farming. Learn more. Jessica Harrison became active in GM-free movement in the heady days in the late 90′s in the UK, when GM crops and food were rejected by many European countries. On returning to Australia, she worked with the Network of Concerned Farmers and Gene Ethics to form GM Cropwatch, monitoring roadsides and testing for GM canola contamination. Jessica and Celia found the first season’s roadside GM contamination in Victoria, after the GM ban was lifted in 2008. With Fran Murrell, she co-founded Mothers Are Demystifying GE (MADGE) in 2007. Jessica is now co-ordinating the GM-Free Australia Alliance, building for the major campaign this year: the GM Freeze. The freeze is calling for all GM crop and food approvals to be halted in Australia and New Zealand. Past and present approvals must then be re-assessed, in view of the growing body of evidence showing harm from GM crops and the herbicides sprayed on them.
