FILM SCREENING PSYCHO (USA 1960, Alfred Hitchcock) – MONDAY, JUNE 16th, 4 P.M., R8 IN COLD BLOOD (USA 1967, Richard Brooks) – TUESDAY, JUNE 17th, 6 P.M., R8 According to influential film scholar David Bordwell, post-classical American cinema begins with PSYCHO. Rarely has a film been so ruthless in undermining the Hollywood conventions that audiences had learned to trust in. The murder under the shower may be its most indelible claim to a secure place in movie history. Besides the cinematic artistry of that scene, it epitomizes the film’s strategy to enduringly unsettle the viewer by suggesting that no place, not even the most intimate, is safe from unspeakable, unexpected, and unexplainable terror. A disturbing crime is also the focus of IN COLD BLOOD, which adapts Truman Capote’s non-fiction novel about the festering violence in the heartland of America that explodes in an act of savage cruelty and the even more frightening because so coldly mechanical violence that is meted out as punishment, in stark black and white images, which communicate all the harsh bleakness of its subject matter. Note that PSYCHO will be screened at 4 p.m., two hours earlier than originally scheduled, due to the Germany game. Expect further rescheduling because of the World Cup.
