FINAL chance to register for upcoming Citizens Academy The Hernando County Sheriffs Office is taking its Citizen Academy on the road. The program teaches people about the inner workings of the sheriffs office. The topics each will include meeting the sheriff and his command staff and getting up close to the HCSO K-9 and Civilian Mounted units. Now, for the first time, it will be held in an off-site location, which officials say will open up the program to citizens with mobility issues. The first off-site location to host the program will be Atria Evergreen Woods, which is located at 7030 Evergreen Woods Trail in western Hernando County. The program will be open to 15 residents of Atria, plus 15 community members from at large. It lasts five weeks, starting Wednesday, Jan. 14 and meeting each Wednesday through Feb. 11. The program starts at 9 a.m. and ends at 2:30 p.m. with an hour break for lunch. The deadline to register is Friday, Jan. 9. To sign up, visit hernandosheriff.org/applications/citizensacademy/.
