FINDING VIVIAN MAIER by John Maloof GENRE: Documentary MISS KITTY SCORE: 4 out of 5 The true story about how a young man happens upon the negatives by an unknown photographer whose work will rock the art world is intriguing to say the least. Vivian Maier was a nobody – in fact, she appears to be an enigmatic, very private woman who would probably cringe today (she died just before Maloof was able to track her down) at the global attention she is getting. The story spans France and the U.S., where a young woman never seen without a camera around her neck worked as a Nanny with American families. The story about how the negatives were found and brought to the art world is intriguing, but the accounts by the people who knew her as Nanny Maier are shocking. What a paradox: that such magnificent photos that capture the vulnerability of humanity were created by a woman who, it could be argued, bordered on mental incapacity or at the least, eccentricity. All these elements make this a fascinating documentary.
