FIRE PROOF. PORTENO AND GELATO MESSINA FEATURE EXCLUSIVE COLLABORATION AT SYDNEY FESTIVAL. It will take more than a blaze of fire to stop the Porteno boys from producing some of the best meat you’ve ever tasted in your life. Relieved to hear nobody was hurt in this afternoons fire at Portenos restuarant in Surry Hills, we’re also relived that we can still sample their tasty menu from Double Down Diner. Portenos latest collaboration with Gelato Messina featured in this years Sydney Festival. Open now. Originally announced on the Festivals official blog, The Double Down Diner is open for lunch and dinner from January 8-25 (closed Mondays) at the Hyde Park Festival Village. Portenos Ben Milgate and Elvis Abrahanowicz will offer their take on 14 classic American dishes ($10–$15), including chilli dogs, chicken and waffles, Philly cheese steak, maple, bacon and pumpkin pie and a Reuben sandwich. For dessert, double down with one of five Gelato Messina creations, including Not Chicken and Waffles (maple and pecan gelato masquerading as a chicken drumstick on a Belgian waffle with whisky caramel gravy, $10) and The Nutty Piefesser pie (peanut-butter biscuit base layered with peanut custard, vanilla gelato, peanut crunch and whipped cream, $8). Wash it all down with house-made creaming soda spider ($6) and two thick shakes, including the pretzel and salted malt shake ($8). We don’t know why this took so long to happen, but were glad it did.
