FIRE UPDATE: The NT Fire and Rescue Service are currently in attendance at a large bushfire in the rural area, just outside Darwin. Firefighters from Berrimah, Palmerston and Humpty Doo Fire stations, along with a number of Volunteer Firefighters from the surrounding rural brigades are currently in attendance at the fire in Howard Springs. The fire front is in the vicinity of Bastin Road, bordering Whitewood and Hillier Roads. Fire crews are currently undertaking suppression activities with the assistance of Bushfires NT air support, with two fixed wing aircraft and three helicopters in the air water bombing the fire. At present there are no road blocks in place, but authorities urge the public to avoid the area if possible, drive with extreme caution and follow all directions given by emergency services personnel. District Officer Ian Lockley from the Community Fire Safety Command reminded the public of the importance of maintaining firebreaks. “This incident serves as a timely reminder for people to ensure their firebreaks are installed and sufficiently maintained. “Firebreaks not only form a barrier to slow the fire, but serve the ever important function of allowing fire appliances clear access if required to fight a fire. “Thankfully we have had no reports of injuries at this time, however some structural damage has been reported,” said DO Lockley.
