FIREFIGHTERS CONTINUE TO FIGHT FIRES IN LAKE COUNTY This past weekend, lightning strikes have sparked at least 38 fires in south central Oregon on lands managed by the Fremont-Winema National Forests, Lakeview District of Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF), National Park Service and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Since Friday, July 26, Klamath County had five confirmed fires and Lake County had 33. Firefighters have done a great job keeping most fires to 1/10th of an acre or less, especially in Lake County, which received the largest number of lightning strikes. The biggest fires this weekend were the Ferguson and Tiny Two fires. The 15-acre Ferguson Fire, located eight miles northwest of Bly, Ore., was reported on Sunday. This fire burned on private land in mixed timber and sagebrush. Fire suppression efforts included resources from the BLM, ODF, U.S. Forest Service and private contractors. Firefighters have nearly contained the Ferguson Fire, utilizing a dozer and two hand crews to clear vegetation. At this time, there is no threat to any nearby structures and fire crews will start mop up soon. Tiny Two Fire, located south of the Sycan Marsh on the Fremont-Winema National Forest and private lands, was also reported on Sunday. It is estimated to be over 200 acres, burning in grass, brush and timber. The fire is five percent contained with a 100 percent dozer line around it. Fire suppression efforts include resources from the BLM, ODF and Forest Service, The Nature Conservancy, industrial landowners and private contractors. Air resources included a S.E.A.T plane, heavy air tankers and helicopters. A red flag warning for high winds with low humidity was forecast for the northeastern part of California, and may possibly affect southern Oregon. As early as Tuesday evening into Wednesday, lighting is expected with little to no precipitation.
