FIRST AID TIP - WOUNDS AND BLEEDING A wound is an injury to the skin and will result in bleeding. If we lose more than a third of our blood then an insufficient amount of blood will reach the brain, and we begin to die. It’s a priority to control the bleeding reduce blood loss, minimise infection and prevent (or treat) shock. Step 1. Apply direct pressure to the wound. Ask the casualty to do it themselves until you can apply a clean, sterile dressing. Step 2. Elevate the wound above the casualty’s heart to help reduce blood loss. Step 3. Sit or lay the casualty down. If the bleeding is severe, treat for the prevention of shock by laying them down and elevating their legs. Keep the casualty warm. Step 4. If the bleeding continues through the first dressing, apply another one. If bleeding continues remove both and start again. If the bleeding is severe always call 999. You should ensure that your first aid kit is always equipped with sterile dressings of various sizes, nitrile gloves and bandages. First aid kits should comply to either the HSE minimum stand or the BSi 8599 Workplace First Aid kit listing. For advice please give us a call.
