FIRST DAY OF SPRING! All the holidays…from turkey & stuffing to green beer & Irish soda bread are DONE-DONE…TIME TO CLEAN IT UP! Spring cleaning shouldn’t end with the closets, clean out your kitchen too! Get the junk out of your diet by getting it out of your kitchen first. Read your labels. If you can’t read it, don’t eat it! A good trick is to try to incorporate one new HEALTHY habit at a time—practice it until it becomes a HABIT! First biggy to give you an immediate improvement in your overall wellbeing: get the white out of your diet! Ditch the empty calories found in refined carbohydrates and exchange them for 100% whole grains and complex carbs. Restock with lighter, healthier options, and don’t leave home without them! Try not to fall into the trap of letting yourself get so hungry (hAngry!) that you come home or go out to dinner with friends like a ravenous garbage disposal! Schedule your workouts as if you are scheduling a meeting, put it on the calendar! I know it seems difficult at first, but ONE HOUR IS ONLY 4% OF YOUR DAY, and the benefits will far outweigh the hour you squeezed out of your day to devote to breaking a sweat. Once you start, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it (or in some cases how anyone in your household survived you living without it). You’ll reduce stress, look & feel amazing and sleep better. Make realistic, attainable goals so you don’t burn out in the first few weeks of your new regimen. Take every opportunity to move your body as often as possible…USE IT OR LOSE IT. It all counts: take the stairs, get off a subway stop before your destination, park your car farther from the entrance, make workout dates with friends instead of meeting for cocktails or get out of the office at lunch and go for a walk. Try to add a new goal—or better still, lose a bad habit—every week. It’s all cumulative, meaning, for better or worse, IT ALL ADDS UP. IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE ALL OR NOTHING, BUT IT DOES HAVE TO START WITH SOMETHING. Get fired up and start something new this spring! SPRING 2014.....BRING IT ON!!
