FIRST LOVE. Nevertheless I have this against you ,that you have left your first love. Rev. 2:4 Like the church in Ephesus, we need to beware lest we depart from our first fervent love for Christ and the church. The Ephesian church had an outstanding testimony. Surely we could be in fellowship with at church like that. They had worded hard (labor) had endured well (patience), and had even tried false apostles and exposed them. But they were lacking in what was most essential--their heart condition. The Ephesians did not lose their first love, they left it. They were backsliding in spite of their good works. Why is it important to maintain our first love? For one thing, the Lord Jesus loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood (Rev.1:5). In addition we know that the time is at hand (1:3). Already in Johns day, Christians believed that the time of Christs return was near. How much nearer is the time today! But if our first love has waned, we are not ready. Remember therefore from when thou are fallen, and repent, and do the first works. At first your love was strong. You would do anything for God. You showed good deeds of mercy to all thous around you. You read much of the Word. You prayed fervently. You faithfully attended church services. You testified to others. Now you must repent and do the first works. Blessed is he that reads, and they that hear the words of this prophecy (Rev. 1:3) Read with the heart. Store it up for the future. Commit all you can to memory. These things help to keep our first love fresh so that when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before Him at His coming (1 John 2:28). Blessings,
