FISH PARASITES IN LAKE ARROWHEAD! Caught a decent trout today and it came up looking like it had white barnacles on it until we looked close. White worm like things were on it from head to tail. These things are small, mushy and look like a very small head attached to the fish followed by a body that branches into a Y. They are called Lernea and often found in gills of the fish but attach to the body. The legs of the Y are egg sacks! We only caught the one fish and it was lethargic, probably from the parasites sucking the life out of the poor creature. ALA says you can eat the fish as long as the fish is scaled and you dont eat the parasites... (Yeah, sure!... not me!!!) Reports say: Usually there are few parasites present on fish and they go unnoticed, however occasionally they can become numerous and quite evident on gills, in the mouth and at the base of the fish’s fins. When present in extremely high numbers they can cause a fish health problem but this is rarely seen in the wild.
