FISHING REPORT SURF: KILCUNDA: Salmon to 1.2kg have been caught by anglers casting soft plastics and metal slugs from the surf. Bait anglers have been doing well also with blue bait and squid baits working best. The use of burley has been essential when bait fishing, as it brings the fish to you and keeps them there rather than passing through catching a couple then the fish are gone. WESTERN PORT: REEF ISLAND: Reef Island is fishing well despite the cold and miserable conditions. Fishing the shallows is producing good numbers of whiting to 42cms along with squid to 1kg. Shucked mussel and whiting worm seem to be the best baits. CORINELLA: Quiet at Corinella pier, but there are still a few trevally and flathead showing up and taking pipis. TYABB BANK: Some nice squid to 1.3kg have been found working the shallows at Tyabb Bank. STONY POINT: Shannon Knight and myself launched off Stony Point and fished the local area, we found that there was a seemingly endless stream of barracouta to be found, with fish taken in 10-20 meters at nice 2-3kg sizes. Something big and toothy also decided to get in on the action as we saw a 10kg outfit buckled followed by a frayed, cut line from serrated tooth, we guessed big school shark. PORT PHILLIP BAY: SORRENTO: The fishing around Sorrento this time of year is pretty stable with good catches of squid and whiting the main target species. It has been reported that there have been some cracker whiting from Sorrento through to Point Nepean and between there and Swan Bay are the go to spots for whiting at the moment. MORNINGTON: Fishing the rocks at Mornington appears to be producing some nice squid at the moment with size 2.5 jigs doing well. MT ELIZA: A few quality snapper have showed up either early or late depending on which way you want to look at it. Either way they are there and worth a crack at when the weather allows. Fishing in 18-20m of water on a tide change seems to be the key and if you can get this at first or last light then your chances improve dramatically. PATTERSON RIVER: Patto River has fished well with some quality bream taken on both baits and lures after the rain we had the other day. Best method has been to fish live baits like fresh water yabbies or scrubworms on a lightly weighted running sinker rig. Lure guys have done well in the canals with vibes and plastics fished around the structure. The average size has been good with a 35-38cm being nothing out of ordinary. ST LEONARDS: Massive numbers of quality whiting around the St Leonards area and Swan Bay. Squid and Mussel cocktail baits have been the key. FRESHWATER: WESTERN DISTRICTS: Bullen Merri has fired up a little bit with good numbers of small rainbows and Chinook salmon caught trolling Tassie devil lures. Flat lining in the morning around the edges has worked well and as the day goes on down rigging in 40-80ft depending on where the fish are sitting is the go. With the new released salmon, handle them with care as those fish in 2 years time will be pushing upwards of 2-3kg and become trophy fish. Information taken from IFISH Weekly Report.
