FIVE THINGS TO KNOW TODAY (9/9/2014) Your Post-Bulletin connection to late-breaking news, upcoming events and stories that will be talked about today: IBM Mayo Clinic and designers of the IBM cognitive computer known as Watson will team up in 2015 to match the right patient to the right cancer-research study using a version of Watson specially designed for Mayo. Were in the middle of a data explosion like weve never seen before, Mike Rhodin, IBM Watson Group senior vice president, told more than 600 health care thought leaders at the Mayo Clinic Center for Innovation Transform symposium Monday. Watson is the cloud-computing system that famously won a specially arranged Jeopardy! competition. TILL FARM Once the City of Rochester surrounded his familys 114-year-old farm, developers and Realtors have regularly talked to Jim Till about selling the prime real estate on 19th Street Northwest. For years, Till turned down the offers to buy the farm, which across for the Rochester Athletic Club and the new Lourdes High School. He bought it from his mother, Leone Till, in 2006, though he has lived there all of the 61 years of his life. You look back, you hate to leave, but youve got to go sometime, said Till of his decision to sell. This is a kind of prime piece of ground. RPU INCREASE Rochester Public Utilities rate increases for 2015 will cost the average residential customer about $3 per month, a figure the Rochester City Council would like residents to focus on and understand better. The RPU Board approved a 5-year rate increase plan, calling for a hike of 3.5 percent in 2015, followed by 1.7 percent increases in 2016 and 2017. No increases are projected for 2018 and 2019. City council members said during Monday’s committee of the whole meeting that they’ve heard concerns from residents about the increases. WINONA BRIDGE The Saint Marys University pedestrian bridge across Hwy. 14 will be torn down after a semi struck and damaged it Monday afternoon. The Minnesota Department of Transportation has closed the highway until the bridge is removed, causing major temporary delays. Meanwhile, the university will be left to figure out a short-term solution to allow students to safely cross the highway, as well as to decide whether to replace the bridge. “We feel (the bridge) is at risk of collapse and want to ensure that the public is kept safe until we can remove the bridge, said Steven Kirsch, a MnDOT assistant district engineer based in Rochester.
