FIVE members of a Durban family, returning home from a visit to relatives who lost a loved one through cancer, were among seven people who died in a horror crash on the N2 near Richards Bay at the weekend. Sundressan Pillay, 46, his wife Loganie, 40, her cousin Ashley Moodley, 37, his father Gonnie Moodley, 67, and niece Natalie Iyer, 19, were returning home to Kenville in Durban after an unexpected trip to Richards Bay when their car was involved in a collision with a bakkie early on Saturday morning. The vehicles burst into flames and the occupants were burnt beyond recognition. The details on the other two victims are not known. KwaZulu-Natal Transport MEC Willies Mchunu has since assembled a team of forensic experts to probe the crash. “It is, indeed, a sad reminder that we need to spare no efforts in ensuring we remain alert and cautious on our roads during this time. While awaiting the full report of what caused this accident, we urge our road users to always drive within the legal speed limit and ensure they are always alert by stopping for a refresher after every two hours.”
