FLASHBACK FRIDAY Further on last weeks article on the Mulwala Canal we have a feature on The Drop. Located on the Berrigan Barooga Road, The Drop is where the Mulwala Canal ‘drops’ to meet the change in elevation of the surrounding area. The force of the water over The Drop was recognised as having potential to fuel a hydroelectric power station. Pacific Hydro installed a hydroelectric power station on the canal, between 2000 and 2002. The power station, with a generating capacity of 2.5 MW of electricity, is Australias first hydroelectric power station on an irrigation canal. The project is now generating clean, renewable energy without affecting the water flow to the 2,600 farms the canal supplies. Operations at The Drop abate around 8,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions every year. The project can also generate 10,000 Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) each year, as recognised under the Australian Federal Government Mandatory Renewable Energy Target scheme. A 10-year agreement to sell all the RECs and energy generated by the plant to Country Energy is in place.
