FLIPPING THROUGH THE DPPs MANIFESTO: PART 1 By Greyson Chapita Finally it’s here! The manuscript that is set to bring life to the DPP’s comeback bid. This is a document that is bringing much more energy and firing up the blue side of town on the road to the May polls. We are talking about the DPP’s manifesto. In summary the foreword screams in bold “This Manifesto is a reflection of DPP beliefs and values which are grounded on people-centred development approaches, long term infrastructure developments, people-driven economic paradigms, and a culture of respect for human rights and human dignity for all”. Ladies and Gentlemen, in short I would say this is a document that covers it all. As I am flipping through the pages I am reminded of the immeasurable and touchable developments that characterised the DPP regime under Bingu Wa Mutharika and you can’t blame me for nodding my head in appreciation that indeed this document carries with it plenty of hope for Malawi. For example on food security, this is what the DPP is saying; “We will re-establish food security for all Malawians and make the country the food basket for the region. In this regard, the DPP government commits to sustain fertilizer subsidy for the poor in Malawi. In fact, we commit to abolish the coupon system and make subsidized fertilizer available for every maize subsistence farmer that needs it”. The question is, can we be talking about food security in Malawi minus DPP? The answer is NO! in bold. In my view, the DPP is promising what it has achieved before. This is a fact and nobody can take away this achievement from them. In fact they will just continue from where they stopped. Still flipping through the pages, I came across a courageous statement which says “the DPP government will pursue Zero Tolerance on Corruption, Bribery, Fraud and Theft of government resources. There shall not be Cashgate scandal under the DPP”. Wow! This is so daring… but yes they have to do that because people of Malawi have made it clear that they will never entertain any government that will come simply to destroy everything about Malawi. By declaring Zero tolerance on corruption, fraud and theft, the DPP is simply talking the language of Malawians. It doesn’t end there. The manifesto has outlined how the DPP government will work to improving the health service delivery in the country. They have also declared how they will labor to eliminate illiteracy by 2019 and advance technology by 2023. What a dream! Good people I would go on and on because this document is well articulated, so comprehensive and impressive. This is a manifesto that is talking to me and is clear as to what the DPP wants to achieve when it gets back into government. However my only advice to the party is that they really need to work so hard to sell this document. Let them be on the ground day in day out and out match their opponents who seem to be some miles away with their campaign. Here is the DPP’s manifesto for people to decide! Vote wisely! Vote DPP!
