FLOOD THREATENS NAVY BARRACKS IN CROSS RIVER Except the Federal or Cross River State government swiftly intervenes there is the likelihood that many old structures belonging to the Nigerian Navy, including the barracks may soon be washed away by perennial flood. Rear Admiral Charles Obiora Medani, the Flag Officer Commanding, Eastern Naval Command who made the revelation noted that the resources and capacity of the Naval authorities cannot cope with the environmental challenge. Speaking to journalists while inspecting units and ships under his command, he appealed to the Cross River State and federal governments for sizeable assistance. Rear Admiral Medani stated said several attempts made by the Nigeria Navy in the past to control the flooding and erosion in the Akim Barracks have defied every effort. He said: “We have a military-and-civil-authorities relationship and we have appealed to the civil authorities to come and help us because the scope of erosion menace in that barracks is above our resources and we hope this will be done soon”. Admiral Medani said year in year out, the Nigerian Navy has poured in its meager resources to try to combat the erosion menace yet the rate of flooding at the barracks has increased making it practically impossible to access large parts of the barracks when it rains. “The rains would soon set in and we hope something will soon be done to address the situation and on our part we are doing the much we can to stem the tide of flooding in that area” On sea-based crimed especially piracy, the state of facilities at the Eastern Naval Command, he said he is impressed with the state of preparedness of the command to combat any form of militancy in the Calabar –Equatorial Guinea – Gabon water ways and assured those travelling on that route to have their minds at rest.
