FLUFFY, COLD WEATHER DEER: Weve been having extremely cold nights lately. Note how the deer has fluffed-up its fur (to increase thickness of the insulating, trapped air layer) and how its tail is tucked way in (to decrease surface area, slow heat loss by radiation). Each hair is raised with tiny arrestor pili muscles that respond to autonomic nerve input (we experience the same thing, if pathetically, when the hairs on our arms or necks are raised either by chill or a fight-or-flight response).
