FOCUS ON FRONTIER JUSTICE - The California case, When one thinks about frontier justice they might equate it with vigilante justice, and that assessment was not so far off. But that does not take into account the miners law code, which was black and white, but did offer equity. In California history there were other factors as well including the Spanish justice system headquartered in Monterey and the Mexican system, first established in San Blas, Baja California, but later moving northward. The number one driving force inciting legal battles after 1849 was gold, and unfortunately without established courts and circuit judges, the hapless fool who tried to cheat another miner had a short life.
