Spend some time getting to grips with thumbnails and you will find your painting life transformed. IDENTIFYING THE TONAL VALUES OF YOUR COMPOSITION also helps enormously at this early preparatory stage; for the more time you spend on understanding the overall composition and the elements within, the more time you free up to concentrate on the painting process – so much better than worrying about how to ‘fix’ a problematic composition later on. TRANSFERRING YOUR COMPOSITIONAL ELEMENTS TO YOUR PAINTING SURFACE – follow Paul’s simple approach and you can get rid of that ‘grid’ system; a system that Paul despairs of, for he firmly believes that it is too rigid and restricts the artists ability to be more expressive in their compositional thinking.
